A group that advocates for and supports migrant workers in Canada is blasting an idea recently floated by Premier Doug Ford, saying it leaves workers open to discrimination and demonization.
Earlier this week, Ford changed his position on mandatory COVID-19 testing on farms.
He used to oppose the idea, but now says it would help stamp out coronavirus flare ups, particularly in Southwestern Ontario regions like Windsor-Essex.
However Chris Ramsaroop of Justice for Migrant Workers says forcing migrant workers to get tested would subject them to “criminalization and heightened surveillance” of workers.
A number of Ontario farms have been dealing by COVID-19 outbreaks in recent weeks.
Officials announced Friday that Windsor-Essex now has the highest rate of the coronavirus in the province.
