OPP say a driver is hurt after their vehicle was struck by a flying tire on the 401 between Courtice and Oshawa.

Sergeant Kerry Schmidt says it is the third wheel separation on GTA highways since Thursday morning.

In the most serious incident, a pickup truck travelling westbound on the 401 lost a wheel, which bounced across lanes and crashed into the windshield of a car heading east.

Schmidt says the driver isn’t seriously hurt and their injuries are not considered life-threatening.

The highway has been closed for clean up.

Earlier in the afternoon, OPP had called the driver’s injuries “serious.”

Their identity has not been released.

The two other incidents happened on the 401 eastbound at Neilson and the 400 southbound at Sheppard. No one was hurt in either of those two incidents, though a trailer did lose all of its wheels on its left side.

Officers say the scary accidents highlight the need to make sure your tires are installed correctly.

In late March, a woman escaped serious injury after a tire smashed through her windshield on the 401 in Mississauga.
