Durham K-9 unit tracks down suspect in Toronto after trailer stolen in Clarington's Profile

A local K-9 unit made an arrest Tuesday after chasing a stolen trailer from Clarington to Toronto. The suspect was taken to hospital with a bite wound.

Officers say they were called around 11 p.m. to an RV centre on Rundle Road, where two people were stealing the trailer and a pickup truck.

One officer arrived while the theft was still in-progress. Police say the vehicle rammed into the officer’s cruiser before taking off at high speed. Air1 was called in to follow.

At one point, the vehicle stopped. The two suspects attempted to unload the trailer, at which point they were met with a K-9 unit.

Police allege that they almost ran over the officer and his canine partner (PSD Hawk) while driving off.

Air1 followed the trailer onto Highway 401, going westbound. It was eventually abandoned on Thorncliffe Park Road in Toronto. The suspects fled on-foot.

The K-9 unit was able to track them to a nearby apartment. The passenger of the stolen vehicle was arrested while the driver escaped again, on-foot.

James Scott, 41, of Perth, has been charged with theft (over $5,000), possession of property obtained by crime (under $5,000, two counts) and theft of a motor vehicle.

He was taken to hospital with a bite wound and later released.

Anyone with information is asked to call Det. Naccarato at 1-888-579-1520 ext. 1606, or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).
