Whitby MPP Lorne Coe says the province is investing more than $365,000 to help keep Durham’s public transit riders and staff safe.
According to Coe, the new cash will help the region pay for enhanced cleaning on Durham Region Transit (DRT) buses.
“Ontario’s public transit systems are critical to supporting the economy and getting people where they need to go, as the Province gradually reopens and people return to work,” said Coe. “This funding will assist in protecting the health and safety of transit workers and passengers in Whitby and the Region of Durham.”
It’s part of a larger, $15-million support package aimed at helping 110 different municipalities across Ontario boost cleaning on public transit.
“We recognize that municipal transit agencies across the province are facing significant financial challenges as a result of the COVID-19 outbreak,” said Caroline Mulroney, Minister of Transportation. “That is why we are providing funding for enhanced cleaning on public transit systems and continuing to work closely with our municipal partners to support safety on public transit.”
