Hundreds of athletes have descended on Durham Region for another edition of Ontario’s annual Parasport Games.
A number of events are planned over the course of the weekend, including sledge hockey, goalball and wheelchair basketball.
Skiing events are happening Saturday at Brimacombe near Orono.
More events are planned Sunday, including medal rounds. The closing ceremonies are set for later that day.
“We have a rock wall here [at the Abilities Centre] with the folks from Aspire Climbing in Whitby,” said Co-chair Don Terry, in an interview Saturday with CKDO’s Terry Johnston (CKDO and Durham Radio News are both owned by Durham Radio Inc.). “They’re trained to work with people of all abilities. I just saw a young woman with cerebral palsy be lifted out of her chair and climb a rock wall.”
“To see the smile on her face, and the smile on her mum’s face – that’s the kind of thing that these games are all about,” he added.
