Durham Region issues Extreme Cold Weather Alert during winter storm's Profile



Durham Region’s health department issued an Extreme Cold Weather Alert on Friday.

Thanks to heavy winds, the wind chill is expected to dip below -20 degrees Friday afternoon.

If you need somewhere to avoid frostbite, you may want to look into the warming programs below. However, it should be noted that these warming centres have varying hours. Not all of them will be open at a given time of day.

  • Chestnut Hill Developments Recreation Complex (1867 Valley Farm Road, Pickering)
    • Open until 10 p.m. Friday
    • Open between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. Saturday
  • East Shore Community Centre (910 Liverpool Road, Pickering)
    • Open 10 p.m. Friday until 7 a.m. Saturday
  • Respite Centre (Christian Faith Outreach Centre) (sales pavilion at Ajax Plaza – 27 Station St.)
    • Open 10 p.m. Saturday until 7 a.m. Sunday
    • Open 10 p.m. Sunday until 7 a.m. Monday
    • This program is for both men and women, but no pets.

  • Do Unto Others (DUO) (446 Simcoe St. S., Unit D, Oshawa)
    • Open overnight Friday, until around 8 a.m. Saturday
    • This program is for both men and women. Pets are allowed.

    • Open 9:30 p.m. to 8:30 a.m.
    • This program is for both men and women, but no pets.

You may also want to look into the shelter programs below. However, it should be noted that these shelters have limited space and may need to direct you to another location. You should call ahead before arriving at one.

    • This program is for single females and female sole support parents.
