Durham police say an out-of-province driver is facing a dangerous driving charge after he crashed a rented Maserati in Whitby, leaving the luxury car fully engulfed in flames.
Officers were called about a three-vehicle crash in the area of Victoria Street and Gordon Street around 10:30 p.m. Monday.
According to investigators, the Maserati was speeding along Victoria Street when the driver lost control.
He struck the centre median and crashed into a grey Honda.
Officers say the rental car spun out following the first collision, eventually striking a Tesla SUV and knocking down a street light.
Although the driver of the Maserati was left with minor injuries, he was able to get out of his vehicle before it went up in flames.
The other two vehicles were left with significant damage but no one was seriously hurt.
Investigators have arrested the driver, Wassim Nedjar, 21, of Montreal, and charged him with dangerous operation of a conveyance.
Anyone who witnessed this crash or has dash-cam footage is asked to call Cst. Towler of Durham police’s Central West Division at 1-888-579-1520 ext. 1836, or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).
