Over the last three months, Luke’s Place in Oshawa has seen a 63 per cent increase in women reaching out for support.
Program Manager Samantha Warden says the pandemic has set the stage.
“Typically key risk factors for violence against women and girls include food shortages, unemployment, economic insecurity, school closures and living in confined conditions with abusers,” explained Warden, adding they’re on track to serve a thousand women this year.
This month, Luke’s Place is recognizing Woman Abuse Prevention Month as part of the 8th Annual Wrapped in Courage campaign.
You can contact Luke’s Place if you’re interested in purchasing a purple scarf to show support to many brave women who face and have fled violence.
However, given the pandemic, organizers are giving you another way to support both the campaign and the work of Luke’s Place within Durham.
You can make a $5-25 donation by texting COURAGE to 41010. Every donation will be distributed equally across participating Ontario VAW shelters, as well as Luke’s Place.
