Ontario COVID-19 Update: January 22's Profile

There were 47 more deaths linked to COVID-19 cases across Ontario Saturday, bringing the death toll to 10,912.

The province is also reporting 4,026 hospitalizations due to COVID-19, which is 88 fewer than Friday’s report.

Of those patients, 600 are in the ICU, ten more than Friday.

There were 6,473 cases reported Saturday, but Public Health Ontario admits case counts are an underestimate of the true number of individuals with COVID-19 in the province.

As well, hospitalizations tend to be an undercount on weekends, due to some hospitals not reporting their bed counts.

The number of known active cases went down to 71,387, but that number is also underestimated due to the province’s testing limitations.

There were 36,396 tests completed the day prior to this report with a backlog of 16,149 tests.

So far in Ontario, 29,977,268 vaccines have been administered.

According to the province, 12,405,477 people have at least one dose and 11,595,052 people have received two doses and 5,955,345 have three doses.

In Ontario, 88.50 per cent of eligible residents five and up have their first shot and 82.75 per cent have two doses.

Right now, third doses are only open to those 18 and up, and 49.64 per cent have three shots.
