The province’s scientific advisory body has put out a new report showing a jump in the number of deaths during the pandemic.
They say there were 13 per cent more deaths during the ongoing health crisis, compared to non-pandemic times.
However the report notes “excess death” is not strictly limited to infections from COVID-19.
Some of the deaths could also be attributed to causes which, researchers say, are likely related to the pandemic, but not directly due to the virus.
That could include people who put off getting medical treatment due to the pandemic or those suffering from worsening mental health or substance use.
The advisory table says they arrived at their conclusion by looking at creation figures, compared with the expected number of deaths using data from previous years.
