The province’s police watchdog, the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has opened an investigation after a 66-year-old man fell to his death during an interaction with police in Toronto’s north end.
According to the agency, police were called to an apartment building on Outlook Avenue, not far from Jane and Eglinton, around 4:30 p.m. Friday.
Officers told the SIU that they saw the man hanging from a ninth floor balcony.
The agency says police headed upstairs and entered a neighbouring unit.
They began talking to the man from the adjacent balcony, but he fell a short time later.
He was rushed to hospital but pronounced dead on arrival.
The man’s name has not been released.
At this point, two SIU investigators and two forensic investigators have been assigned to the case.
The SIU investigates any reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.
