On Monday, Ontario reported the first death in the province associated with a rare blood clotting disorder linked to the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine.
Associate Medical Officer of Health Dr. Barbara Yaffe says the man in his 40s received a first dose of the AstraZeneca vaccine at the end of April.
She says he passed away a few weeks later.
Yaffe says it’s been confirmed that the man had vaccine-induced immune thrombotic thrombocytopenia, (VITT) at the time.
Nearly one million people in Ontario aged 40 and older have received the AstraZeneca vaccine.
On May 11, the province paused the rollout and administration of first doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine.
Second doses of the vaccine will move forward in Ontario.
Data from the UK suggests a much-reduced risk of VITT in second doses of AstraZeneca.
