Toronto’s Sunnybrook Hospital is making it easier to get urgent medical help during the pandemic with their new virtual Emergency Department.
It’s part of a six-month pilot project in partnership with Unity Health and the University Health Network.
Anyone with serious, but not life-threatening health concerns will be able to book same-day, online appointments with ER doctors.
The hospital recorded a decrease in ER visits during the first wave of COVID-19, which officials attribute to virus fears.
The pilot is also meant to help under-served areas and improve wait times.
If you’re looking to book a virtual appointment, the hospital says you should speak to your family doctor beforehand.
The booking system opens every weekday at noon and appointments will be available between 2 p.m. and 9 p.m., Monday to Friday.
You must have a valid Ontario Health Card to use the service. It is not available to anyone who is outside of the province at the time of the appointment.
Appointments can be booked online or by calling the hospital at 416-480-6100.
