Local businessman Norm Picov is being remembered for his role in the community.
The owner of Ajax Downs died Saturday, according to an obituary.
The Picov family are notable supporters of the Ajax-Pickering hospital. In 2020, they donated $50,000 to the hospital’s foundation to help feed workers on the front lines of the pandemic’s early waves.
“On behalf of Ajax Council, I’d like to share our condolences on the passing of Norm Picov,” said Ajax Mayor Shaun Collier. “Norm’s family opened Ajax Downs over 50 years ago, and since then, has been a respected member of the Ajax community. Carrying on a popular and successful tradition of Quarter House racing in Ajax has advanced the development of the town, bringing together surrounding communities.”
“Norm’s kindness, philanthropy and commitment to growing horse racing in Canada, and here in Ajax, will not be forgotten,” he added.
