Canada’s minister of youth says the WE organization will not be managing a program to pay young people for volunteer work.
In a statement this morning, Bardish Chagger described it as a mutual decision.
The decision to give WE Charity control over the $900-million program has been criticized, due to a close relationship between founders Craig and Marc Kielburger and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
The feds say the organization was chosen for its public service.
The program aims to reward students and recent graduates for volunteer work during a summer marked by COVID-19, and help those who can’t find summer work.
Chagger says the decision shouldn’t affect anybody who has already signed up for the program.
WE Charity says it will pay back the money that it’s received from the feds.
